What Is The Worlds Largest Tyre?

Print

The world’s largest tyre ever built is a Uniroyal promotional icon. It's a 'car tyre' that is a staggering 24.4 metres tall and weighs a whopping 12 tons and was built for the 1964/65 New York World Fair, though its current home is in Detroit, Motor Town, on the Interstate I-94 Highway.

Surprisingly, it was originally made as a giant Ferris wheel for the pavilion of U.S. Rubber at the New York’s Word Fair. Later, after the fair had ended they added the tread pattern to complete the world record holding tyre.

In order to move the over sized car tyre after the fair, it had to be cut into over 180 sections and reconstructed on site. Interestingly, later on a new hubcap was fitted onto the tyre to bring it up-to-date!

Uniroyal later used the iconic tyre to advertise their self-sealing tyres, by having a 11 foot nail made to pierce the giant tyre. Unsurprisingly, the nail itself broke the record for the world largest nail! The nail was later removed and given to the city of Allen Park. “The Big Nail” has now become an icon and is used in many charity and fund-raising events.

The largest production tyres are manufactured by Titan, and measure a lofty 14 foot tall and weigh 12,500 pounds. They are OTR tyres (off the road tyres) used in mining applications in Canada’s oil sands, and Titan produces around 900 of these OTR tyres each year.
