Trelleborg Prepares For South Pole Expedition with Massey Ferguson

Trelleborg has been selected by Massey Ferguson as the official partner for its tractor expedition, “Antarctica 2014”, which is to be held in November 2014. The 2,350 kilometer expedition will see 'Tractor Lady', Manon Ossevoort, drive a MF 5600 tractor to the South Pole across treacherous snow and ice with a team of polar specialists.

Tractor In Antarctica

For the expedition, Trelleborg has developed a special multi-purpose set of complete wheels, both tyres and rims, which will enable the MF 5600 tractor to tackle the severe weather conditions of the Antarctic.

Stringent testing of standard agricultural tyres conducted by Trelleborg and Massey Ferguson engineers found that due to the adverse weather conditions and harsh environment of Antarctica, fuel consumption and required traction performances would provide significant challenges.

Therefore, a tyre with premium floatation, which results in enhanced pressure distribution on the ground and superior traction, was essential to guarantee reduced fuel consumption, higher grip and increased driver comfort and handling.

Trelleborg engineers opted to adapt the tread pattern of their ProgressiveTraction™ tyre, reducing the height and rounding the tread at the shoulder

Coventry To Play Host To Motorsports Event

Coventry is set to become the first city in the UK to stage competitive motorsport on its public roads.

Coventry City council has given the green light to racing by using new Government legislation designed to allow cities to host motor sports events.

The organisers of the Coventry Motofest 2015 event will stage competitive time trials on Coventry’s ring road following on from the Government’s decision to grant councils powers to turn public roads into temporary racetracks.

In July, local authorities were given the opportunity by the Government to suspend the Road Traffic Act, previously requiring an act of Parliament, and Coventry has been the first to take advantage.

As a result, Motofest 2015 has partnered with the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) to stage a two-day programme of time trials featuring vehicles from across BARC’s various championships and race series.

It will, subject to Motosport Industry Association (MIA) approval, see the Coventry ring road play host to British Formula 3 cars, vehicles from the British Touring Car championship and Porsche Carrera Cup series cars, amongst others.

Gretel The Tractor Revamped For Charity

Devon students have lovingly restored a vintage tractor to raise money for an international agricultural charity.

The now-glossy red 1962 Massey Ferguson petrol tractor – dubbed Gretel – was donated to land engineers at Bicton College in East Devon by Tractor and Machinery magazine in January.

The students spent three days restoring the 52-year-old vehicle in front of crowds at the Devon County show in May, and it will now be raffled to raise money for Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust (Boat).

The raffle will be drawn at the Vintage Tractor Show in Newark, Nottinghamshire, on November 8.

Tractor Speed Limit To Rise By 5mph To 25mph

The speed limit for tractors will rise from 20mph to 25mph in March 2015, the Department for Transport has announced.

The combined maximum weight limit for tractors and trailers will also rise from 24 tonnes to 31 tonnes.
Transport minister Claire Perry said the changes would "better reflect the capabilities of modern machinery".
Announcing the changes to existing regulations - which have been in place since the 1980s - Ms Perry said: "Current weight restrictions to the total combined weight of tractors and trailers offer farmers a perverse incentive to use smaller tractors to pull large trailers, in order to maximise the amount of produce that they can carry within the maximum weight allowed."

Mitas To Announce PneuTrac Plans, Recieves Award For Tyre/Track Hybrid

Although only a concept at present and “still some way off” from its commercial release, Mitas holds high hopes for the PneuTrac, a product it says combines the best of both worlds in traditional pneumatic tyres and rubber tracks.

The Czech Republic-based tyre maker is carrying out intensive tests on a prototype PneuTrac fitted to an 18-inch rim, has begun dynamic testing using a 38-inch fitment and is planning to test a new, third size.

Mitas says it will announce its plans for PneuTrac at the EIMA agricultural exhibition in Bologna, Italy at a press conference scheduled for 13 November.

PneuTrac has also received an EIMA Technical Innovation award prior to the exhibition’s opening. The Mitas concept is one of 15 products honoured this year and the only tyre-related innovation.

New Fitments Added To Michelin's Tweel Range

Michelin North America is expanding the market footprint for its airless skid steer tyres with the launch of two new versions of the Michelin Tweel SSL airless radial.

Take a look at the effectiveness of Michelins Tweel tyres in this video!

These additions to the Tweel portfolio are the 12N16.5 X Tweel SSL All Terrain for a wide range of surfaces and the 12N16.5 X Tweel SSL Hard Surface for pavement use. They join a range that was first introduced two years ago after a development phase that lasted the best part of a decade.
“Our newest versions of the 12N16.5 X Tweel SSL provide the benefits associated with pneumatic tyres, but they don’t go flat. This is a breakthrough innovation for skid steers in the landscape, construction, contracting, refuse/recycling and agricultural industries,” said Ralph Dimenna, head of Michelin Tweel Technologies.
